Goalkeepers and game models
Hi Everyone, Welcome to another edition of The Top Ten of the Week. It’s only February and it looks like the league titles in England, Spain, and Germany are wrapped up! Also good progress vaccine-wise in many countries, so hopefully we’ll see a return to getting back to doing what we love and just semi-normal life in general!
This week we’ve got a couple of goalkeeper articles which I like to have as a coach who has trained goalkeepers in the past, I think everyone should have more knowledge around all aspects of goalkeeping, it’s such an important position in the team and won that is highly pressurized. Right on to the top ten…
Top Ten Of The Week
A handy booklet from the team at The Modern-day goalkeeper on Goalkeeper psychology. I would recommend reading even if you're an outfield coach, as it will give you an insight into the mindset your GK's will need for this demanding position.
Many of the high possession teams (Man city, Liverpool, Barca, Munich, Leipzig) are utilising their goalkeepers as an extra man in possession. If you've wanted to know some of the key points of implementing this check out Carl's work below
I highly recommend watching this video but also reading up on the training ground guru's article on AZ Alkmaar's academy. Something's I personally don't agree with but it's an eye-opener to innovation and trying something different to player development. In this video, Marijn Beuker is explaining his interpretation of explicit vs implicit learning.
I wanted to share this from Sam, not because I think you should copy it but just to give you an insight into the way you should be thinking about a game model if it's something you want to implement at your club. Fantastic work here.
Some more free content here this time from the Lithuanian football federation on their game models for younger players.
One of the world's most renowned coaches Arrigo Sacchi talking through his methodology of improving his team’s weaknesses based on the previous game. It's an interesting concept especially using the end game with conditions. Have you tried something similar? how did it go?
Coach Dogge created a thread going through the different types of formats, shapes, and sizes for training games. Do you have a favourite from any on the thread? do you change the shape of the pitch to try and replicate the situations in the game?
This one is not strictly coaching but I saw it and it reminded me of the range of emotions we and our players go through. What I liked about this was the simplified center. As part of being player-centered understanding why someone may be angry, for example, what could be causing that anger, and is there anything you can do to help them channel it. This graphic should give you some direction into the different ways anger can be expressed.
Have you ever thought of psychological safety....no me neither, well not in the way it's been described but the principles of when you have it are clear and something I strive to achieve. Have you created an environment where there is psychological safety for your teams?
Another post from the modern day goalkeeper team something that puts into perspective our knowledge. The coaches at the very top of the game all say the same thing. They are always learning and this is the reason why!
Thanks again for joining me on this edition. as always if you know any coaches, parents, or people in general who’d benefit from this post or from the newsletter please share using the buttons below. Have a great weekend and week.
