How do you balance coaching and life?
Hi Everyone, welcome to another edition of the Coach Insight newsletter. Have you all been watching the World Cup? Some amazing shocks, and football being played. The pinnacle of international football and always makes me wonder if one day I’ll have the luck of coaching a player who will one day grace that very stage.
This week we have looking into the trend of coaches quitting the game, what’s involved in coach development, 8 tips to master to be an elite coach and much more! Enjoy.
The Top Ten
I thought long and hard about starting this weeks newsletter with this post and thread from Cody Royle as it’s on the negative side but I feels it’s so important that all us coaches take time to assess how much we give to the game and our teams. How can we find a balance between the passion and detail that comes with the role and finding times for life away from football, especially with family and friends

First one up from Ray Power and it’s a pyramid of success from John Woden. How would you order your pyramid of success? Have you ever thought about what success means for your and your players? Try putting something like this together and see what your fellow coaches and players think. Would be a great collaboration exercise.
Michael Loftman never disappoints with his content. Another great one but this time on the things you need to master to be a high-level coach/manager in football. what would your score be out of 10 for each?
Blaine McKenna this time taking us through the highlights from a recent Jose Mourinho interview with Sky sports. He runs through becoming a leader, evolving your leadership, strategic success, staying motivated, modern football and more.

Not massively relatable from a grassroots level but I thought it would be interesting to look into the detail of data that is now provided at the professional level, especially at the elite level.
Liverpools head of coaching Martin Diggle talking to Technique journals Peter Glynn about using simple practices to help you focus on the player and not the exercise. https://www.techniquejournal.com/gated/needs-simple-practices
Another top post from Michael Loftman, this time outlining how he believes coaching principles have a specturum. From unopposed to opposed or structured to free. Do you principles have a specturum and if so how do you apply that specturum to your players needs?
Last up this week is an article from the england learning football team on helping players move with the ball. This article takes you through the providing realism, encourage using space, inspring bravery on the ball, and experience of different playing surfaces. https://learn.englandfootball.com/articles/resources/2022/How-to-help-your-players-move-with-the-ball
