How do you create your team spirit?
Hi Everyone, welcome to another edition of our coach insight newletter. The Euros and Copa America are finally over (although the Gold Cup, Concacafs international competition, and the olympics are in play) attention switches back to club football. Before that I wanted to talk through both the England and Italy camps. Reading what I have about both teams it seems their managers have been able to capture and elevate the social and psychological corners for their teams. Both speak of families instead of teammates, of unforgettable summers which couldn’t have been spent with better people, and lastly, the collective will to bring happiness and greater good to their respective countries. Don’t get me wrong both had great tactical understanding and in-game management (Maybe not so much for Southgate in the final itself) but this togetherness and unified goal ultimately pushed them through. What can we learn from this to take an implement into our teams, have can we create a common goal/higher purpose. Difficult possibly for those coaching younger ages groups and amatuers but something to think about as you plan pre-season. Right enough of me and on to the top ten.
The Top Ten Of The Week
Thought-provoking tweet from Rob Porter here "cacthing players in rather than catching players out" can we sometimes focus way too much on fixing the mistakes rather highlighting the successes.
Ever wondered what the effect of small -sided games have on tactical actions. Well here the research points it out. more offsenive actions with GKs, ball out of play more with 2 mini goals, and without GKs led to a higher rate of defensive errors. All useful information when looking at your outcomes for session design.
Have you ever really looked into your warm up, what it is, why we do it, and how to get the most from it? Callum Moss takes you through just that in his article and series on the warm up.
Great Article form the FA's bootroom talking through their four elements of intelligent play. intention, perception, technical action, individual tactics. DO you agree with these, should there be more should there be less.

Another one from the bootroom this time on counter attacks. This subject can be a great discussion point, I've always felt in England we really value counter-attacks however it can be difficult for players to know if you're implementing a patient possession based game model.

I know this one was a little late but it's a great video and also thread on penalty taking and the psychology behind them.
Another tweet about penalties but this time about the goalkeepers actions. apparantly a moving goalkeeper distracts the penalty taker, an interesting tip for your GKs
3 FA bootrooms this week! I could have left it out but I felt it's important as it's something a lot of lone coaches (by lone, I mean one's without a GK coach) struggle with. How can we better design practices taking into consideration of our GKs.
Nice infographic from the coaching manual team here looking at 4 different types of session. which is your favourite? Do you use a combination? If so, which do you use the most?
We've had a few counterpressing top tens but always good to revisit the theory. This time it's Eric Laurie with a long thread on what it is and how it's implmented.
