Is your ego getting in the way of your coaching?
Hi Everyone, welcome to another edition of the Coach Insight newsletter. As any regulars may have noticed the last edition was 3 weeks ago. Well, I went on holiday thinking I would send it out whilst away but the signal where I was staying was awful and it had no internet connection! SO whilst this is a little late here is your top ten.
As this was written before Thursday’s tragic news, as just wanted to say may HRH Queen Elizabeth ii rest in peace and our thoughts are with her family, and all her nations at this time.
The Top Ten
First up this week is from the Player Development Project team. Dave Wright takes us through coaching and Egos! I’m sure you’ve seen a few but in this insightful piece thoughts turn to what the best coaches do, how to remove yours, and the reasons why it’s important to do. https://playerdevelopmentproject.com/get-over-yourself/
In the 90’s it seemed every midfielder in the english game was a box to box player, the first specialist I remember was Chelsea’s Claude Makekele. The modern Box to box may be a little different due to the demands of coaches now and how the game has changed but this long-form article from Rhys Desmond takes you through the type, different roles they have, and their attributes. https://themastermindsite.com/2022/08/09/explaining-the-box-to-box-midfielder-player-role-analysis/
Really interesting article from The Training Ground Guru team here on Arsenals Individual development coach Carlos Cuesta. Now individual coaches have become more popular and most clubs now have a permenant one or one who comes in a couple of days a week, however, the age and skillset of this coach is unique. two things are clear for me your ambition and drive as a coach can take you to many places but also, individual coaching is still important, no matter what twitter coaches may say. https://trainingground.guru/articles/carlos-cuesta-coaching-prodigy-who-focuses-on-arsenal-individuals
Magnus Strand outlining Marizio Sarri’s Pro-Licence thesis here. Great insight into a top level coaches thinking and preparation to coaching. Three rules during practice games. 2 or 3 touch, goal only valid if attackers in opposition half, and goals worth two if transition quickly and defenders still in opposition half.
Thought provoking article from the Training Ground Guru team this time. Why shape now formation matters. This makes sense because it’s how the players perform their roles in the game situation (attack, defense, transition) rather than where they are at anyone time. https://trainingground.guru/articles/ben-mackriell-why-shape-not-formation-matters-most
Sport Psychologist Dan Abrahams here with a handy guide to getting your players into the habit of mental training.
A mega thread on twitter but a useful one none the less. Magnus Strand talking through Ralf Rangnick and Julian Nagelsmanns concept of forcing your luck. essentially pressing as a team, occupying good positionss and spaces to be in areas that the ball is most likely to go.
For those wondering how ball mastery session should work within a session or want to see how it’s done on a professional level. then have a look at Saul Isaksson-Hurst’s video with Crawley town.
Tennis Coach Philip O’Callaghan here with a thread on Skill and learning within the concept of enskillment.
another good thread from Dan Abrahams but this time looking into the wrong way of training players to learn patterns of play. do you training patterns of play, how do you feel this can help?
