Scanning, Fun, Motivation
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to another week of CoachInsight. Had some great feedback again last week. I’m always wanting to hear back from readers on how the newsletter is helping them or if there is anything they want to see more of/less of. If you have any feedback just reply to this email or you can reach me on twitter https://twitter.com/ACharlesFoster I’m going to doing an interview series on coaches from all walks of life, from professionals to grassroots, that will go alongside the usual top 10. Look out for it in the coming weeks. Anyway on to the top ten!…
Top ten of the week
Love this thread on scanning! Central players do it more, which isn't groundbreaking but it is nice to have it backed by evidence. The next step is application. How do we incorporate scanning into training without it being forced? How do we make it more game and situation-specific?
Over a third of boys and girls drop out of sport because of a lack of fun! are you incorporating fun into your sessions? Do you know what fun means to each individual? how do you encourage a collective meaning of fun within the team?
Something for you and your players. have you been able to use your anger as motivation? do you know the pros and cons of using this method? well Sports Psychology outlines in this post.
New blog post on SportPsychTips.com | Using Anger as Motivation Read my latest blog post to learn the pros and cons of using anger as motivation. Learn to control your anger so you can maximize the pros and minimize the cons!Great video and words from Kara Lawson (head coach of Duke womens basketball teams). leanring from other peoples mistakes is an essential part of growth. Do you agree? have you learnt from other peoples mistakes?
Bradley schluter here outlining and explaining the constraints led approach, what is it, the different elements, what you need to think about when implementing, and what it can lead to for players.
Former FA Foundation Phase lead Pete Sturgess talking about session design within the foundation phase. Short, sharp, and to the point. Will they enjoy it?
The Training guru's interview with Dave Reddin. beware of the Unicorn coach. Whilst this article points to the professional game its interesting for all phases of the game. does your club have a consistent philosophy, does it invest in its coaches/do you invest in yourself?
Former Man Utd Youth coach Paul McGuinness on why observation skills are vital. Have you ever been to see other coaches and their sessions, Have you been to see cat1/cat 2 academy games to see how they put sessions on and how they are coached? I definitely recommend it if you get a chance. I know it's difficult with current circumstances but once the restrictions loosen write to your local club.
There have been some interesting discussions on "messy" sessions. Controlled chaos as I call it. the game is perfect so why should our sessions be. Again this goes back to making sure your sessions are game realistic. This way also helps players to be more independent in their decision making as they have experienced being able to come up with solutions to in-game problems already.
Always remember when Chris Ramsey gave me the U9s Head Coach at Spurs...messey sessions were vital and also messy games/fixtures was what he wanted...these are often when you get the most interesting/creative outcomes!“I’ve seen football sessions where they look like they’re perfect, like clockwork. But the game’s not like that, is it? It’s messy, so you’ve got to create sessions that are messy.” 🗣 Eddie Jones #TheFutureGame @jeff_weigh @GaryCurneen https://t.co/yOlKVF5TCT https://t.co/wI9UaTVCvRTraining Ground Guru @ground_guruLike these questions from Tony Elliot on the Modern goalkeeper. It looks into the demands of the modern game, implications for the goalkeeper, and questions for you to think about when thinking of your team in possession and out of possession
