Should you stop using Rondo's?
Hi Everyone, welcome to another edition of the Coach Insight newsletter. This week we have the ultimate Rondo question, ways to reflect, how to better help players who make mistakes, and much more. enjoy reading!
The Top Ten
First up this week we have an interesting thread that had lots of discussion and opinion on Twitter, it’s theme? “Why coaches need to fall out of love with rondo’s in practice” whether you’re a rondo lover or not it’s bound to be an emotive statement. The thread in itself is excellent and goes into explaining why this was the conclusion. The basic learning from me is to question why you’re doing anything in your sessions, what is it leading to, who is it for, etc. Something we should all be doing.
Instead of just ‘doing’, ask why, and why again. Karl has done an excellent job here of analysing a commonly used exercise and creating thought provoking conversation around the ‘why’. If coaches did this with every exercise - we’d quickly improve football coaching universally.1/15 When I defended my PhD in November, I was given an assignment by the committee called "Why football coaches need to fall out of love with Rondos in practice". I looked at specificity, transfer of learning, scanning and creativity. I will now present some of the findings. https://t.co/QLyfAniXBlKarl Marius Aksum @aksumfootballI’m a massive advocate for reflection both in sport and life. It’s such a great way to ensure you’re still on the path you want, desire, and will fulfill you. Here Aaron Walsh presents some great themes and questions for self-reflection that you can use to help you.
Some nuggests of gold from NBA basketball coach Steve Kerr on building a winning culture at the Golden State Warriors. player not wanting to leave even though they were losing, hard work coupled with time for fun, and family. Proves not everything has to be stick, and belief in what you are creating even when things aren’t going to way you’d like. https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/warriors/how-steve-kerr-preserved-warriors-winning-culture-through-losing-seasons
Have a read of this article from Stuart McMillan. Some provoking thoughts. Are we too quick to correct mistakes rather than let our players explore solutions for themselves or at the very least question how they can maybe do differently? very much along the lines of teaching a man to fish rather than giving them the fish. i.e. teach them how to explore correction rather than directly telling them what they did wrong. https://altis.world/articles/stop-trying-to-fix-athletes/
The training ground guru team going through the changes that the German FA made to their foundation phase through their implementation of Funino but this time concentrating on one of the leaders of the revolution Professor Matthias Lochmann. my favourite quote from the article “A player who is intelligent goes through four phases," he explains. "First you have to observe the environment. Then you understand what is going on. Then you make a decision. Then you execute. Most training exercises focus only on execution, but to have game intelligence you must be successful in all four.” Really made me think about my sessions. https://trainingground.guru/articles/matthias-lochmann-how-germany-revolutionised-the-foundation-phase
Peter Motzenbecker with an infographic on the different types of rotation managers use in the professional game. Do you try to get your teams to implement any of these?
Nick Gearing here with his research in football and what it means for coaching. This time the topic is scanning.
Talked about Steve Kerr earlier but here are his key values to his teams. how do yours compare?
Parents can be the hardest part of grassroots, and sometimes academy football but some helpful tips from the cutting edge coaching team.
And finally, for this week, something I try to make sure is in check for me and see a lot of in other coaches. EGO’s! Can you let yours go? When you truly learn to, it’s such a freeing experience. looking the best, having the best team, best players, strip it all back to the why you even got into coaching and why you continue to turn up every day. https://playerdevelopmentproject.com/get-over-yourself/
