Too many or need more?
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for joining me on another edition of my top 10 of the week. Some really interesting articles this week with a couple of academic papers, which I know can be a bit heavy for everyone but they are an essential part of coaching, being able to confirm what we see through our experience in replicable academic study is the gold standard for knowing we’re doing our best for our players. If they are getting a little too much please do let me know and I will reduce the amount I add to the newsletter. As always feedback is most welcome! you can either reply to this email (if you get this delivered directly), leave a comment on the main substack page, or find me on Twitter https://twitter.com/ACharlesFoster Anyway on to the top ten!….
This weeks top ten
Peter Prickett trying to create a season sessions plan using the phases of the game. What do you think? do you plan that far in advance, do you even break it down like that or is that too prescriptive?
As last week another academic paper but this time looking at the effects of relative and biological ages on coach evaluation of match performance

How do you get them to play together for each other with everyone pulling in the same direction?
Whilst not directly football related it's definitely food for thought for us coaches. "when people lack status, they resort to unnecessarily technical language in an attempt to look smart."
Another gem from iCoachKids. they have teamed up with UEFA to provide free courses for grassroots football coaches across Europe! This will be provided via national FA's so keep an eye out but find out more information via the link

Whilst it's not groundbreaking, it's nice to have something we've long thought confirmed by scientific study. "the more a player scans, the higher the probability of completing a pass"

I really like this one from Dan Abrahams. Clues or as some coaches call them cues/triggers. How are you coaching your players to recognise them? Dan shows you the self talk you can show them to help them stay focused on those clues.
What do you think of these 15 ingredients of a successful team? Any you would take out? is it missing anything?
Another one from Dan. what is the toughest task of a 21st-century coach? To make sense of the psycho-social component. Here Dan directs you through some key considerations
