What are you strengths as a coach?
Hi Everyone, welcome to another edition of the Coach Insights newsletter. This week we have interesting reading on self-reflection, pressing, inverted full-backs and coaching methodology. Enjoy!
The Top Ten
First up is Dr Josie Perry who will take you through a small exercise on knowing your ideal strengths and the strengths you actually have. I like this because it will help you see your weak points and where you need to improve.
A few weeks back our top ten contained a person who put out some points that questioned the effectiveness of the Rondo, so it all fairness of balance here is APFCourses explain their points to prove the effectiveness of Rondos
Peter Motzenbecker highlights how to set pressing traps for full-backs or their number 6. Pressing is such an important part of modern-day football but if not done well or disjointed you’ll be easily played through and give up good opportunities in your goal.
Staying on the pressing theme. The mastermind site has produced a long-form article on the art of pressing. Key themes of when to go and when to stay, the popularised 5-second rule, recognising triggers, pressing from restarts, and full-backs and single-handed pressure. https://themastermindsite.com/2022/08/30/when-to-press-and-when-not-to-press-in-football/
Guardiola, Ten Hag, Arteta. What do they have in common? Their use of inverted full backs! what are inverted full-backs? EBL outlines the concept in this thread.
A concept here from big picture soccer around co-adaption or co-construction of skill. that is a move from isolated patterned build up into adapting acording to your opponent. e.g. isolated - we build up a certain way and stick to it. co-adpative we build in many different ways dependent on where the space is. It’s an interesting concept that would affect how you coach because one allows your players to thrive in chaos where as the other limits their ability to adapt to the opponent as they must always play they way that has been trained.
Do you know what makes a champion? Well Steve Magness has looked into the research of this very topic with some points to note. There are difference in amount of training, early specialisation, and rate of progress.
An article here from Cody Royle on the crazyness of being a coach. why do we do it!

Dan Abrahams taking us through Barak Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction. review, question, sequencing and modeling, and stages of practice.
And finally Cano Football’s look into one of the most effective (in terms of value to club when looking at assimilation into first team from Youth teams) academies in Spain, REAL SOCIEDAD’S ZUBIETA ACADEMY. From only starting their academy at U13 to having personal relationships with the 70 clubs in their catchment area. A people first academy that has been consistently producing player for both the first team andn national team. https://www.canofootball.com/articles/a-look-inside-real-sociedads-zubieta-academy-long-term-visions/
