What do you think of online coach education?
Hi Everyone, thanks again for joining me on another edition of the newsletter, apologies for missing last week. I had a migraine and unfortunately when I get them I end up getting them really bad and can’t look at a screen for a couple of days.
As you’ll see later in the top ten of the week, the Canadian FA have moved a lot of their grassroots learning online, we’ve seen the Scottish FA move a lot of their learning temporarily online, and the FA also has plans for the level 1 to be completed online as well. They’re massive learning online learning platforms such as Udemy and Coursera, so it makes sense that football educations moves in that direction especially in the current circumstances. I do wonder if there will be something lost in not having that face-to-face conversations and group work where you’re learning from other students as well as the course and tutor. Have you completed any online courses? what did you think? tell me your experience either replying to this email or finding me here. Anyway on to the Top ten of the week.
Top Ten Of The Week
Emma Hayes and her Chelsea team are having an unbelievable season that could end in a historic quadruple. The training ground guru team recently met up with her and talked through her philosophy, methods, and more.
.@emmahayes1, who’s bidding for the quadruple with @ChelseaFCW this season, on the importance of “positive discomfort” in training. podbean.com/ew/pb-hi5a5-10… @HudlAnalysis @schneiderweiler @simoncollo @tonysprangers @_CoachAli_Mark O'Sullivan here explaining his learning in development framework. Mark outlines 3 phases as a cycle that include the coach's design, the players playing and lastly the players recovering, developing, and growing. Some really interesting points to think about when creating your sessions and trying to get the most from helping players develop.

Something of contention when it comes to the foundation and youth phases, more so in the foundation phase. Allocating playing time! what's your take on it. Should it be equal or should some players get more than others?
Whilst this is a bit of a plug for his book and services, Cody Royle makes a great point of coaches having coaches or more likely mentors. The FA had a great mentoring system recently but with cuts in budgets and reduction in courses, this may not be as available as it has been previously. Have you got a coach or mentor? What do you lean on them for the most?
A nice quote here from Johan Cruyff on player development. something to think about when creating your plans/sessions.
Interesting developments from the Canadian FA around their grassroots programs, education, and standards. they've given guidance on formats, coaches’ qualifications, maximum match time per player, and restarts. Will we see more coach education move online?

Have a read of this thread by John Harrison. he talks through the good and the bad of Kasper Schmeichel’s performance against Newcastle on Friday. This is especially good for those that aren't GK coaches.
Have a listen to this podcast with sports Psychologist Dr. Francesca Champ on the balance of performance and well-being in football. Do you think we have the right balance? does grassroots do better than academies? How about Professional vs Semi-professional. Lots to think about.
Dan Abrahams with his three primary mental skills in sport. Attention, Intensity, and Intent. With your best players do you see all three attributes? how about those at the other end, what are they missing.
I wrote my degree on coping skills, so please don't underestimate the importance of them when it comes to your players. Tips on when and how to use them along with an article explaining more about them.
