What's your most powerful coaching belief?
Hi Everyone, welcome to another edition of the coach insight newsletter. This week we have 6 lessons from a top coach, what and how to get the most out of warm-ups, helping players harness their minds, a survey response from players on what their coach can do to help them achieve their best, and much more. Enjoy!
Johan Cruyff - “Playing football is very simple, but playing simple football is the hardest thing there is.”
The Top Ten
We start this week with Phillip O’Callaghan taking his lessons from Paul Kinnerk. Which of the 6 do you feel is the most important? I like the first “maintaining belief in adversity” whilst we may have to adapt to our situations, if your why of coaching is grounded in a solid foundation then come back to it when times are hard.
I chose this as number two because those three words “engaging, memorable, and sticky” how can you hit those three markers with your sessions? UK Coaching notes points on understanding your coaching practice.
The mind is a wonderful thing but we must help our players harness it correctly to use it to improve performance, not to the detriment of it. A good interview from the Academy Dad with Sports Psychologist Keval Patel on the power of Sports Psychology and how to help your players through the different phases. https://www.theacademydad.com/post/___kp
Really interesting survey from Alan Keane as part of his PHD. He surveyed players on what their coach can do to help them achieve their best. What do you think your players would say if you asked them? In fact, why don’t you just do the same as Alan and find out?
I always struggle sometimes with trying to find the best balance with warm-ups without it being too repetitive but giving the players what they need to be ready. a brilliant thread here on lots of different warm-up activities. don’t be afraid to do something that isn’t aligned with your sport here.
Another thread but I promise this one is worth it. Lots to unpack but some brilliant thoughts that really challenge your assumptions. My favourite “TECHNIQUE IS NOT “the correct way”, IT’S “a way” TO PERFORM THE MOVEMENT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.”
Coaching teens? well here’s 12 things to think about when coaching them.
Some more information on warm-up activities but this time from the player development project team. This time explaining what an arrival activity is and how to use them effectively. https://playerdevelopmentproject.com/how-do-i-implement-arrival-activities-at-training/
I’ve never really put coaching podcasts up before but I really enjoyed this one from the cutting edge coaching team featuring Tom shields.
Last one is a great infographic on when to select a type of cross. Remember these are still situational dependant (that is time, space, and opponent) but they are good general rules of thumb.
That’s it for this week. As always, if you know anyone who would enjoy our newsletter use the share buttons below. Have a great weekend and week.
