Would you take the chance to coach abroad?
Hi Everyone, welcome to another edition of the Coach Insights newsletter. Wherever you are I hope you’re dealing with the cold weather! I’ve not been able to train or play for the last two weeks due to frozen pitches and snow which has been nice to recalibrate and start to review the year just gone but at the same time so frustrating as I just want to be out on the pitch with my team. Let me know how you cope with this sort of downtime and how you make the most of it.
This week we have a thread on taking the opportunity to coach abroad, a coaching roadmap, tips on coaching in the winter and in general, and some wise words from Luis Enrique

I wanted to start this week with a great thread on opportunities that coaching brings to you. You may never have thought of coaching abroad but the chance to visit different parts of the world doing something you love should always be a consideration. Here’s Blaine McKenna outlining exactly what that can bring from his experience
A document that is almost 10 years old and things have definitely changed within different federations and governing bodies but interesting anyway. Any surprises with how development works in different countries?
An interesting infographic outlining the roadmap in the coaching journey. Lots of themes to think about, what you do well, and what you can improve on. I love the first one, which is your philosophy, values, and beliefs because that’s what will guide you on your journey.
I like this blog article from The Coaching Manual team about their 6 essentials for you to do before every session. The ball is most important, you don’t need to overcomplicate things, let the players play, remember they are children, involve parents, and if they improve they will want to come back. anything else you would add? https://www.thecoachingmanual.com/blog/6-essentials-to-do-before-every-session/
Foundation age coaching here with their 5 quick tips to improve your coaching straight away.
This one is a bit heavy when it comes to reading but Professor Sophia Jowett and other researchers were investigating how to create the right psychological environment to get the most out of your players. Some highlights, players can feel psychologically safe in an inherently competitive group environment when coaches set the tone by giving their players a voice. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S146902922200231X?via%3Dihub
A translation here from former Spain coach Luis Enrique's twitch stream he did during the World Cup. I love his emphasis on players playing. As much as we impart knowledge and give players lots of decision-making opportunities in games, nothing beat playing.
Some winter weather coaching tips here from Rob Porter. To be honest these tips can be applied at all times.
How do you feel about Ben Barts 4 Ds of session design?
